¿Qué es la EDT/WBS?What is the WBS?

It's the hierarchical decomposition of all the project's work into smaller, more manageable components. Each level down represents a more detailed definition of the work — down to the Work Packages: the lowest level, small enough to estimate, assign, and control.

💡
Regla del 100%The 100% Rule

The single most important WBS principle: the sum of the work in the child levels must represent 100% of the parent level's work — no more, no less. There must be no gaps (uncaptured work) and no overlaps (the same work counted twice).

Level 1 = the whole project. Level 2 = the major deliverables (they come directly from the Scope Statement). Level 3 = the Work Packages — notice each one starts with an infinitive verb, because it describes a concrete, assignable activity.

Notice that "1.4 Project Management" is its own branch — a common mistake is forgetting that coordinating, documenting, and closing the project is also real work that takes time, and therefore must also appear in the WBS.

The tree view is better for presenting and seeing everything at a glance; the indented list view is better for copying straight into a Word or Google Docs document — use whichever suits your submission.

La WBS NO es tu CronogramaThe WBS is NOT your Schedule

⚠️

The WBS organizes work by deliverable (what gets produced?), not by chronological sequence (what happens first?). "1.1.1 Consolidate data" and "1.2.1 Perform EDA" can appear side by side in the WBS even though in reality EDA can only start after data is consolidated — that sequence and its dates are defined later, in the Planning: Schedule module, not here.

This is the same trap you already saw with the Charter's Intermediate Goals: every PMBOK artifact has a specific job to do, and mixing "what" with "when" is the most frequent mistake in a first project.

❌ Demasiado detalladoToo granular

"1.2.1.1 Abrir Jupyter Notebook", "1.2.1.2 Importar pandas" — son pasos de minutos, no Paquetes de Trabajo."1.2.1.1 Open Jupyter Notebook", "1.2.1.2 Import pandas" — these are minute-level steps, not Work Packages.

✅ Nivel correcto (heurística 8/80)Right level (8/80 heuristic)

A typical Work Package represents between 8 and 80 hours of effort — neither a 10-minute task nor a 3-week block. (This is a widely used industry heuristic from the PMI Practice Standard for WBS — it doesn't appear as an exact number in the PMBOK 8 text itself, which leaves the level of detail "guided by the degree of control needed" for each project).

Cómo Construirla en Equipo: el Diagrama de AfinidadHow to Build it as a Team: the Affinity Diagram

El método clásico usa notas post-it: The WBS is best built as a team, not by one person alone at their computer. The classic method uses sticky notes:

1

Alguien escribe las primeras ideasSomeone writes the first ideas

"Consolidar datos", "Entrenar modelo").One person starts writing activities on sticky notes, all beginning with an infinitive verb (e.g., "Consolidate data", "Train model").

2

Todos agregan al menos 3 ideas másEveryone adds at least 3 more ideas

Each team member adds at least 3 more activities they think are missing to complete the project — nobody only sees their own part.

3

Agrupen por afinidadGroup by affinity

Coloquen todos los post-its en una superficie y agrúpenlos por tema — esos grupos se vuelven, de forma natural, tu Nivel 2 (los entregables principales).Place all the sticky notes on a surface and group them by theme — those groups naturally become your Level 2 (the major deliverables).

4

Numeren cada nivelNumber each level

Once you agree on the grouping, assign codes (1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2…) to each sticky note — that formalizes your 3-level WBS.

💡

If a sticky note doesn't fit well into any group, it's probably describing something at a different level of detail than the rest — either it needs a new Level 2 deliverable to belong to, or it needs to be split into smaller pieces.
