Fase 1: Empatizar — Conoce a tu usuario antes de diseñar Phase 1: Empathize — Know your user before you design
Designing without research produces solutions to the problem you assume exists, not the one your user actually lives with. To have empathy, they say, we must put ourselves in someone else's shoes — but first we must take off our own.
An empathy interview is not a survey or a casual chat: it is prepared and conducted with rules. What you want is to understand the person's thoughts, emotions, and motivations to determine how to innovate for them. By understanding the decisions they make and how they behave, you can identify their needs.
Todavía no juzguen.Write down every potential question the team can come up with, and build on each other's ideas. Do not judge yet.
Group the questions into relevant areas and put them in an order so the conversation flows instead of jumping around.
Eliminen lo repetido o fuera de lugar y apliquen a cada pregunta el filtro de capas (más abajo).Remove what is repeated or out of place, and apply the guardrail filter (below) to every question.
In step 3, check that your questionnaire has enough questions of these three types:
“¿Por qué elegiste comer ahí ese día?”“Why did you choose to eat there that day?”
¿Qué pasó?”“Tell me about the last time you ate at the cafeteria. What happened?”
“¿Cómo te sentiste cuando no encontraste lugar para sentarte?”“How did you feel when you couldn't find a place to sit?”
Aunque creas saber la respuesta, puede sorprenderte.Even when you think you know the answer, it may surprise you.
Stories reveal what people think about the world.
Cuerpo, gestos y emociones.Body language, gestures, and emotions.
A pause can lead to a deeper answer.
Aunque la persona dude, no la ayudes a responder.Even if the person hesitates, don't help them answer.
Ninguna pregunta debe implicar una respuesta correcta. No question should imply a right answer.
Invita a una conversación basada en historias.Invite a story-based conversation.
One person at a time; don't ambush the user.

Rotate the roles between rounds so everyone interviews at least once. The Scribe feeds the Say quadrant; the Observer feeds Do and the clues to infer Think and Feel. Also choose one person as the Workshop Owner: the one who enters the team's answers in the workshop and generates the file.
Besides asking, ask the person to show or draw something and then talk about it together (for example: “draw how you get to work”). You can also ask them to explain how they do something and to say out loud what they are thinking as they do it. Meanwhile, the Observer records what they do, what they point at, and what they insist on. What a person draws or shows often contradicts, or completes, what they say.
Rule 1: the production process is untouchable. No proposal may change how the brick is produced, in any way. You work only with the shape (geometry).
Rule 2: the goal. Through shape, your team must be able to justify savings in the construction process: less cement or mortar to join the bricks, less rebar, less paint or finishing, and similar costs.
Proponer cambiarlo, nunca. Boundary rule: asking what the current process allows or prevents, to know which shapes are feasible, is valid. Proposing to change it, never.
The Empathy Map synthesizes your observations into four quadrants. Remember: what someone Thinks and Feels cannot be observed directly — they are inferred by paying close attention to body language, tone of voice, and word choice.
Literal phrases the user says during the interview or observation.
Acciones y comportamientos observables: qué hace, cómo lo hace, qué evita.Observable actions and behaviors: what they do, how they do it, what they avoid.
What they are likely thinking, even if they don't say it out loud.
Emotions behind their words and actions: frustration, anxiety, relief.

A Persona is a semi-fictional character that synthesizes real patterns found across several users: traits, behaviors, motivations, and typical phrases. It helps the team stay focused on one concrete user instead of an abstract group.
The ORIGAMI team interviewed and observed two Engineering Workshop users. Here's how they built the Persona and Empathy Map for one of them:
"I always lose the tiny screws among everything else I carry in my backpack."

Carlos wants order, but has neither the time nor the money to organize himself with expensive or complicated solutions. That contradiction between what he says ("there must be something better") and what he does (improvising with bags) is the design opportunity: a foldable, cheap, quick-to-assemble organizer.
This case is made up and is not about EcoBricks. It has the same structure as your challenge (the process is fixed, only the shape changes, and the savings appear after production) so you can see the full method, but its answers are not your guests' answers. Follow the three phases: prepare, interview, and build the map.
Goal: lower shipping and packaging costs without touching how the pot is made.
Workshop that makes clay pots with a fixed molding and firing process. The design team can only change the shape of the pot. Guests: Laura, Operations Director (sponsor), and Ricardo, Production Lead (who knows the mold and what the process allows).

Each interview had four roles: lead interviewer, follow-up interviewer, scribe, and observer. These are excerpts from the notes: the green column is what the Scribe wrote down, word for word; the yellow column is what the Observer recorded.

Laura's map was built only from what was said, done, and observed. Each entry shows its source, and what she Thinks and Feels carries the concrete clue that allowed the inference.
Laura says the problem is shipping cost, but the first thing she draws is the filler, and what bothers her most is the chipped rim. That contradiction between what she says (Say) and what she does (Do) suggests shipping is the symptom. The design opportunity is in the outline and thickness of the rim, exactly what Ricardo confirmed the mold does allow changing.
1. The questionnaire was filtered before the interview: three questions were rewritten and none proposed changing what the challenge fixes.
2. “Draw it”, “show me”, and a four-second silence revealed more than a direct question.
3. Every map entry can be traced to a source: the Scribe (Say), the Observer (Do), and a concrete clue (Think and Feel).
4. The map used only what was said, done, and observed. Before ideating, the team cross-checks with the other guest and with secondary sources.
