Cómo redactar un objetivo que resista la primera pregunta del SponsorHow to write an objective that survives the Sponsor's first question
You already saw in Value Focus that a technical model isn't the same as business value. SMART objectives are the writing tool that turns that value intention into a concrete, verifiable, ambiguity-proof sentence — exactly what the Project Charter requires in its "Project Objective" field.
SMART is an acronym that forces an objective to have 5 simultaneous qualities. If it's missing even one, the objective is open to interpretation — and in data science, ambiguity is expensive: whole teams training models for weeks without really knowing what they were supposed to achieve.
Dice exactamente qué problema, para quién, y con qué tipo de solución — sin frases sombrilla como "usar IA para mejorar el negocio".States exactly what problem, for whom, and with what kind of solution — no umbrella phrases like "use AI to improve the business".
Has a starting number and a target number — not just a technical metric, but a verifiable business indicator.
It's possible with the real data, time, and team you have — not an optimistic promise made without checking available data quality or quantity.
The target is calibrated to the real context — it's not just "possible" in theory (that's what "A" covers), but sensible given the historical data, the market, and the business's real priorities. It's not an optimistic number picked at random, nor a project no decision-maker actually needs solved.
Tiene una fecha límite clara — nunca "lo antes posible" ni "de forma continua sin fecha de cierre".It has a clear deadline — never "as soon as possible" or "ongoing with no closing date".
PMBOK 8 defines SMART verbatim as "specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound" — the R is Realistic, not "Relevant" (a common variant in other business contexts, but not the one this edition uses). That's why we use it this way throughout the course.
Memorize SMART as a checklist, not a writing order. You can write your objective in whatever order flows best and then check afterward: "have I covered all 5 letters?"
Aquí el mapeo directo: The official ITESM format asks, for the Project Objective field: "a single sentence, infinitive verb, third person; measurable, quantifiable, clear, realistic, and achievable." It's literally SMART in different words. Here's the direct mapping:
| Instrucción del formato ITESMITESM Format Instruction | Letra SMARTSMART Letter |
|---|---|
| "Claro""Clear" | S — EspecíficoSpecific |
| "Medible, cuantificable""Measurable, quantifiable" | M — MedibleMeasurable |
| "Alcanzable""Achievable" | A — AlcanzableAchievable |
| "Realista""Realistic" | R — RealistaRealistic |
When you get to filling out the Charter, don't draft the Objective from scratch: build it first with the SMART checklist, then copy it — already in infinitive form, third person — straight into the official field.
Trampa 1 — La "S" perdida en jerga de IATrap 1 — The Lost "S" in AI Buzzwords
"Usar inteligencia artificial para mejorar la experiencia del cliente.""Use artificial intelligence to improve the customer experience."
"Reducir el tiempo de espera en el chat de soporte de NovaRetail mediante un clasificador de intención que enrute tickets automáticamente.""Reduce wait time in NovaRetail's support chat using an intent classifier that automatically routes tickets."
Trampa 2 — La "M" que mide lo técnico, no el negocioTrap 2 — The "M" that Measures Technical Work, not Business
The "A" that Ignores Real Data Quality
Before committing to a number in the "A", first do a quick review of the available data (how many records? how complete? how balanced is the class you want to predict?). An "achievable" objective without that review is just an optimistic guess.
Here's what the Charter's final sentence looks like, with each fragment annotated by the SMART letter it resolves:
Reduce NovaRetail's monthly customer churn rate from 5.2% to 4.0% within 4 months, using a predictive model that identifies at-risk customers with a minimum recall of 75% (calibrated to available historical data; it's the #1 priority given the $28,000 USD/month loss).
Notice the "R" (Realistic) almost never goes literally inside the Charter's objective sentence as a separate clause — it lives implicitly in the chosen numbers being calibrated to real data and business priority. But it's still part of the SMART checklist you must verify before committing to the objective.
