Estructura de Desglose del Trabajo (EDT) Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Descomposición Visual del Alcance Visual Decomposition of Scope

Many professionals fail when building a WBS because they divide the project into generic time phases (e.g., "Initiation, Planning, Execution"). This makes it impossible to estimate costs or assign vendors. The correct technique is Decomposition: subdividing the scope based on tangible deliverables or physical systems, until reaching components small enough to estimate their cost and duration (Work Packages).

❌ Práctica Incorrecta (Por Fases Teóricas) ❌ Bad Practice (By Theoretical Phases)

1. Diseño → 2. Compras → 3. Construcción → 4. Pruebas.

1. Design → 2. Procurement → 3. Construction → 4. Testing.
(Error: If "Construction" is delayed, we don't know if it's because of the concrete or the robots).

✅ Práctica Correcta (Por Entregables / Subsistemas) ✅ Good Practice (By Deliverables / Subsystems)

1. Obra Civil → 2.

1. Civil Works → 2. Robotics → 3. Software Integration.
(Success: Each deliverable can have its own vendor, budget, and assigned technical team).

The WBS must represent 100% of the work defined in the Scope Statement. If a work package is not in this structure, it simply isn't built and isn't paid for. It shouldn't include 101% either; unauthorized extra work is scope creep.
