El Modelo Predictivo (Waterfall) The Predictive Model (Waterfall)

Filosofía Guiada por el Plan (Plan-Driven) Plan-Driven Philosophy

🌊 La Naturaleza de la Cascada The Nature of the Waterfall

The Predictive life cycle (commonly called Waterfall) is an approach where the project scope, time, and cost are determined in the earliest phases of the life cycle. It is called "plan-driven" because it assumes a high degree of certainty: we know exactly what we want to build, how we are going to build it, and changes during execution are highly undesirable.

ALCANCE FIJOFIXED SCOPE

For the CAPM exam, you must understand the main philosophical difference between Waterfall and Agile. In Waterfall, the Scope is FIXED. The client tells us exactly what they want (e.g., a 10-story building). If something goes wrong, what adjusts is Time (takes longer) or Cost (costs more), but the scope is not negotiated without a formal process.

(En Ágil es al revés: el tiempo y el costo son fijos, y el alcance varía según lo que se alcance a terminar).(In Agile, it's the opposite: time and cost are fixed, and scope varies based on what can be finished).

Ventajas y Desventajas del Modelo Predictivo Advantages & Disadvantages of the Predictive Model

✅ Ventajas (Pros)Advantages (Pros)

Clarity from the start: The client knows exactly what they will get, how much it will cost, and when it will be delivered.
Ease of Control: Having frozen Baselines makes it easy to use metrics like EVM to know if the project is on track.
Knowledge Transfer: Exhaustive documentation allows a replacement to read the manuals and continue if a team member resigns.

⚠️ Desventajas (Contras)Disadvantages (Cons)

Late Value Delivery: The client gets no return on investment (or functional product) until the final phase of the project.
False Assumptions: Assumes the client knows perfectly what they want on Day 1, which rarely happens in innovation projects.

Criterio de Selección: ¿Cuándo usar Waterfall? Selection Criteria: When to use Waterfall?

A common mistake of novice Project Managers is using Agile for everything. The predictive model remains the gold standard (and the only viable option) when the project fits this profile:

High Cost of Change: (e.g., Civil construction). If you mess up the foundation, you can't "iterate" without demolishing the building.
Clear and Fixed Requirements: The client's needs are 100% understood and will not change.
Known Technology: The team already masters the technology; no deep experimentation or research is required.
Strict Regulatory Environments: Medical or aerospace projects where law requires massive audits and manuals before assembly.

🏗️ ¿Por qué el Proyecto Nexus usa Waterfall? Why does Project Nexus use Waterfall?

At SR Consulting Group, building the Data Center (Project Nexus) uses a pure Predictive approach for a simple reason: the cost of being wrong is physical and permanent.

You can't use "Agile" and tell the client: "We will pour the foundation in Sprint 1, test if it holds the servers, and if it sinks, we'll iterate in Sprint 2". In civil engineering, government regulations, laws of physics, and the high costs of steel and concrete demand strict predictive planning where the Design Phase is 100% signed off by structural engineers before pouring a single liter of mixture.
