This is the last piece of your project: you have already designed, built, and tested your prototype. Now you answer another question that matters a great deal in engineering today: what impact does what we design have on people, on the planet, and on the economy? In this lesson you will understand each concept from scratch and see complete examples of how it is applied; by the end you will know exactly what to build for Challenge Activity 6. You do not need any prior knowledge of sustainability.

— Comisión Mundial sobre el Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo (1987), Nuestro futuro común (Informe Brundtland)"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." — World Commission on Environment and Development (1987), Our Common Future (the Brundtland Report)

It is the most widely used definition in the world, and it has three ideas worth separating: (1) Needs: development exists so that people live well today (housing, work, health). (2) Future generations: what we do today must not take options away from those who come after. (3) Limits: the planet's resources (water, soil, materials, capacity to absorb waste) are not infinite. Sustainable, then, does not mean "green" or "recyclable": it means that something can be maintained over time without exhausting what makes it possible.

Vocabulario que usaremosVocabulary we will use

Life cycle: all stages of a product: extracting and processing materials, manufacturing, transporting, using, and, at the end, discarding or reusing it.
Lo contrario del "tomar, hacer, tirar".Circular economy: a model that aims to eliminate waste from the design stage, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate nature (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). The opposite of "take, make, dispose".
Carbon footprint: the total greenhouse gases caused by a product or activity, expressed as CO₂ equivalent.
Resource efficiency: achieving the same function with less material, energy, or water.
Stakeholder: any person or group affected by your solution or that affects it: users, workers, neighbors, suppliers.
Trade-off: when improving one thing worsens another (more strength but more material). Almost every design has one and it must be stated.
Greenwashing: presenting a product as ecological without evidence to back it up. It is the mistake we must avoid most in the infographic.

Imagine a brick, a case, or a game. While it exists it goes through several stages, and at each one it consumes something and leaves something behind. This whole path is called the life cycle. The reason engineering matters so much is that design decisions fix in advance a large part of the impact of the later stages: if the engineer chooses a material, a shape, or a size, they have already decided how much material will be used, how much it will weigh in transport, and what will happen at the end. In ecodesign the idea that most of a product's impact is decided at the design stage is widely repeated; when you use it, find the exact figure in a source and cite it.

⛏️ MaterialesMaterialsqué y cuánto se usawhat and how much is used
🏭 FabricaciónManufacturingenergía, mermasenergy, scrap
🚚 TransporteTransportpeso, volumen, distanciaweight, volume, distance
🧱 UsoUsedurabilidad, seguridaddurability, safety
♻️ Fin de vidaEnd of lifereuso, reciclaje, residuoreuse, recycling, waste

To evaluate a complete life cycle there is a formal methodology, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), standardized in ISO 14040. You will not do a full LCA, but you will use its logic: asking at which stage your design intervenes.

These are the most common "levers". Each one can become an example in your infographic, as long as you connect it to your challenge and back it with a source.

PalancaLeverQué hace el ingenieroWhat the engineer doesEjemplo generalGeneral example
Compares recycled, local, or lower-footprint materials. Using recycled cardboard instead of virgin plastic in packaging.
Optimizes the shape to fulfill the same function with less mass. Parts with voids that keep strength; lightening vehicle parts reduces the fuel it uses.
3 · Reducir desperdicio y energía en el proceso3 · Reduce waste and energy in the processElimina mermas, retrabajos y tiempos muertos (lógica de manufactura esbelta).Eliminates scrap, rework, and idle time (lean manufacturing logic).Una línea que genera menos piezas defectuosas gasta menos materia prima y energía.A line that produces fewer defective parts uses less raw material and energy.
4 · Diseñar para durar y reparar4 · Design to last and be repairedPiensa en vida útil, mantenimiento y refacciones.Thinks about service life, maintenance, and spare parts. A part that is repaired instead of thrown away avoids manufacturing another.
5 · Diseñar el fin de vida5 · Design the end of lifePrevé desarme, reuso y reciclaje desde el inicio (economía circular).Plans disassembly, reuse, and recycling from the start (circular economy).Un empaque de un solo material, sin pegamentos, se recicla más fácil.Single-material packaging with no adhesives is easier to recycle.
6 · Cuidar a las personas y hacerlo accesible6 · Care for people and make it accessibleConsidera seguridad, ergonomía, claridad de uso y costo.Considers safety, ergonomics, clarity of use, and cost. Clear instructions on a construction site avoid errors and accidents; lower cost makes the solution accessible.
Connection to your career, whatever it is: each engineering discipline intervenes in a different part of the life cycle. For example: civil engineering decides construction materials and shapes; mechanical and mechatronics engineering, the design of parts and how much energy they use when operating; industrial engineering, processes, scrap, and times; chemical and materials engineering, which substances are used and what happens to them at the end; electrical and electronics engineering, a product's energy efficiency; systems and computing engineering, the efficiency of software and data centers. Sustainability is not a separate topic: it is looking more carefully at what you already do. For your infographic, ask yourselves at which life-cycle stage your team's design intervenes.
Limit of your challenge (Option A, EcoBricks): the brick's production process cannot be modified; only the shape. Therefore your examples must rely on what the shape does change (less material, fewer pieces, clearer placement), and not on claims about the kiln, manufacturing energy, or any other process you did not touch.
A team writes: "Our brick is ecological because it is innovative." What is the problem?
It is greenwashing: "ecological" and "innovative" are labels without evidence. Better: "Our shape reduces pieces per wall by 12% (team model), which implies less material per m²" and cite a source on why less material reduces impact.

🔺3 · Marco 1: Triple Bottom Line (Personas · Planeta · Utilidad)3 · Framework 1: Triple Bottom Line (People · Planet · Profit)7 min

Para cada P se hacen preguntas concretas:In 1994 John Elkington proposed that a solution should not be judged only by its financial return, but by three results at once. They are known as the three Ps: People, Planet, Profit. It is an orderly way to review a design and not forget anyone. For each P you ask concrete questions:

👥 Personas (People)People

¿Quién se beneficia y quién podría salir perjudicado? Incluye usuarios, trabajadores y comunidad.Who benefits and who might be harmed? Includes users, workers, and the community.
Is it safer or clearer to use?
  • ¿Es accesible en costo?Is it affordable?
Does it improve the work of those who place or make it?

🌍 Planeta (Planet)Planet

What does it take from and leave to the natural environment over its life cycle?
  • ¿Usa menos material, agua o energía?Does it use less material, water, or energy?
  • ¿Genera menos residuos o emisiones?Does it generate less waste or emissions?
  • ¿Qué pasa al final de su vida? What happens at its end of life?

💰 Utilidad (Profit)Profit

Is it economically viable? Here "profit" means the solution can sustain itself, not just a company's gain.
  • ¿Cuesta menos o genera ahorro?Does it cost less or create savings?
  • ¿Alguien lo compraría o adoptaría?Would anyone buy or adopt it?
  • ¿El ahorro compensa el cambio?Do the savings justify the change?

Three rules for using it well: (1) every statement needs a figure or a source, not just an opinion; (2) all three Ps must be reviewed, even if one is weaker; (3) if improving one P worsens another, say so openly (that is the trade-off).

Recycled cardboard costs less than plastic and needs no special tooling.Cotización o precio de referencia (con cita).Quote or reference price (with citation).

Declared trade-off: the arrow uses more ink; the change is small against the improvement in use, but it is mentioned.

EjemploExample 2

Opción A, caso ficticio "Tabique Z": pieza hueca de construcciónOption A, fictional case "Tabique Z": hollow building piece

PPQué encontramosWhat we foundCon qué lo respaldamosWhat backs it up
With an "UP" arrow, a mason went from 155 s to 48 s to understand the placement: fewer errors and less time on site.
Team model calculation + a source on the carbon footprint of construction materials.
Fewer pieces and less mortar per wall lower construction cost; that is the challenge's goal.Costo unitario × cantidad antes y después (cálculo propio).Unit cost × quantity before and after (own calculation).

(Cifras ficticias.)Declared trade-off: widening the walls raised capacity from 62.5% to 70.0%, but leaves less void and forces a review of the estimated savings. These are model estimates, not physical tests of the material. (Fictional figures.)

¿Qué falta en esta frase? "Nuestro diseño ayuda al planeta porque ahorra material."What is missing from this sentence? "Our design helps the planet because it saves material."
It lacks the figure (how much material it saves and how it was calculated), the source that explains why less material reduces impact, and a review of the other two Ps (people and profit).

Each goal is a big theme (clean water, energy, cities…) and each target is a concrete commitment with specific text. The SDGs are useful because they are a common and verifiable language: anyone in the world knows what "SDG 12" refers to.

We cannot know in advance which SDG applies to each team: it depends on what your solution did. Read all 17 cards and look for the closest one. Each card says, in plain words, what the goal is about and when it usually applies to an engineering project. Those with a target number (for example 12.2) are concrete targets you can cite.

Cómo mapear su solución a un ODS, en cuatro pasosHow to map your solution to an SDG, in four steps

  1. Describe qué cambia tu solución con una frase y un dato: "usa 12 % menos piezas por muro".Describe what your solution changes with a sentence and a figure: "uses 12% fewer pieces per wall".
Go through the 17 goals (on the official UN site) and pick the closest one. One is enough; what matters is that it is well justified.
Read the target text inside the goal and choose the one that describes what you do. Citing the target (for example, 12.2) shows that you read it and did not just attach a number.
Justify with evidence and honesty: explain how your solution contributes (it provides a part; it does not solve the whole goal) and cite your source.

EjemploExample 2

Opción A, caso ficticio "Tabique Z" mapeado a tres ODSOption A, fictional case "Tabique Z" mapped to three SDGs

ODS y metaSDG and targetJustificaciónJustification
Uses less material per m² of wall (12.0% fewer pieces in the model), which implies more efficient use of natural resources.
Improves how construction is done by making material use in infrastructure clearer and more efficient.
A wall cheaper to build makes housing more affordable; the cost was calculated with the model and has not been tested on site.

Notice the honesty: each SDG has its target, its justification, and its limit. Choosing three is not better than choosing one well justified.

Common mistake: placing all 17 logos to "cover yourself". A mapping without a target or justification is decoration and it shows. Better one or two goals with an explanation and evidence.

📚5 · Investigar y documentar: fuentes, Biblioteca Digital y APA5 · Researching and documenting: sources, Digital Library, and APA7 min

Esto se logra con cuatro hábitos:The activity asks for at least 3 bibliographic sources and also that you learn how the outcome of an investigation is documented. Documenting means anyone can see where each piece of data came from and check it. This is achieved with four habits:

Start with a question: "how does designing construction pieces with less material reduce environmental impact?" A clear question gives keywords: sustainable engineering, life cycle assessment, construction materials, circular economy, material efficiency. Try both Spanish and English; there are more articles in English.
Search the Digital Library of the Tec (academic databases), not just general search engines. There you find peer-reviewed articles, books, standards, and reports from organizations.
  3. Evaluar la fuente con la prueba CRAAP (Biblioteca Meriam, CSU Chico): Actualidad (¿es reciente?), Relevancia (¿responde mi pregunta?), Autoridad (¿quién la escribe?), Exactitud (¿tiene datos y referencias?) y Propósito (¿informa o vende?).Evaluate the source with the CRAAP test (Meriam Library, CSU Chico): Currency (is it recent?), Relevance (does it answer my question?), Authority (who wrote it?), Accuracy (does it have data and references?), and Purpose (does it inform or sell?).
Take notes in your own words in a source record (see below) and cite at the moment, not at the end.

Este es un ejemplo ya lleno:Each member fills in one record for each source they researched. This leaves evidence of what they researched, where they found it, and what they used it for. This is a filled-in example:

Citar en formato APA (7.ª edición)Citing in APA format (7th edition)

Estas son las plantillas más usadas:APA has two parts: the in-text citation (author and year in parentheses, next to the data) and the reference list at the end, in alphabetical order. Every in-text citation must have its entry in the list, and vice versa. These are the most used templates:

Beware of generative AI: AI tools can invent references that sound real (authors, titles, and even DOIs that do not exist). Using them to organize ideas is not forbidden, but every source on your list must have been opened and read by you in the Digital Library. Before citing a source check: (1) that it exists and opens, (2) that author, year, and journal match, (3) that the text really says what you claim. That is what the source record with path and access date is for.
A classmate gives you this citation: "Pérez, L. (2021). Total sustainability in engineering. World Engineering Journal, 12(3), 45–60." What do you do before using it?
Search for it in the Digital Library and open it. If it does not appear, it does not exist or cannot be verified: it is not cited. If it appears, read it, check that it says what is claimed, and record path and date in the source record.

🖼️6 · Construir la infografía y la aportación individual6 · Building the infographic and the individual contribution12 min

An infographic explains an idea with image and short text so it can be understood quickly. The activity asks for a simple title, at least 5 examples applied to your challenge, images with justification, and references. A clear way to organize each example is a "card" with five pieces of information:

1 · La palancaThe lever

Cuál de las seis maneras de la ingeniería ilustra (usar menos material, diseñar el fin de vida, etc.).Which of the six engineering ways it illustrates (use less material, design the end of life, etc.).

2 · En nuestro retoIn our challenge

What you concretely did and with which own figure (Activity 5 measurement, model calculation).

3 · FuenteSource

In-text citation backing why that lever helps sustainability.

4 · Etiqueta TBLTBL tag

Which P it helps (People, Planet, Profit); it can be more than one.

5 · Imagen y justificaciónImage and justification

An image that shows the example, with a line explaining why that image and what it demonstrates.

✅Ideas claveKey ideas

  • Sostenible es lo que se puede mantener en el tiempo sin agotar lo que lo hace posible; no es sinónimo de "verde".Sustainable is what can be maintained over time without exhausting what makes it possible; it is not a synonym for "green".
Design fixes a large part of the life-cycle impact: that is why engineering is a lever for sustainability.
The Triple Bottom Line reviews People, Planet, and Profit; the SDGs provide a common language with concrete targets.
Every claim carries an own figure or a verifiable source; without evidence it is greenwashing.
The infographic is built with cards: lever, our challenge, source, P and SDG, image with justification.
