You already built your prototypes and measured your response variable (Session 4). Now you need to answer: which factor mattered most? was the difference you saw real, or could it be due to chance? In this lesson you will learn, from scratch and with the complete formulas, two tools that answer this with different levels of rigor. You do not need a statistics course: every concept is explained in plain words and solved step by step with an example.

Statistics has words that sound complicated but describe simple ideas. We will use one running case, the ORIGAMI project: a cardboard organizer for which we measure how many kilograms it supports before deforming, changing the cardboard thickness and the folding type.

Experiment: a set of tests done on purpose, changing something to see what happens to a result.
Factor: lo que decides cambiar. En ORIGAMI: el Grosor y el Plegado.Factor: what you decide to change. In ORIGAMI: Thickness and Folding.
Nivel: cada valor que toma un factor. Grosor: Delgado y Grueso. Plegado: Acordeón y Libro.Level: each value a factor takes. Thickness: Thin and Thick. Folding: Accordion and Book.
Combination or treatment: a specific mix of levels (for example Thick + Book). Each combination is one variant of the prototype.
Variable de respuesta: lo que mides. En ORIGAMI: el peso soportado, en kg.Response variable: what you measure. In ORIGAMI: the weight supported, in kg.
Replicate: repeating the same combination again, building and measuring anew (not copying the datum). It is used to measure chance.
Mean (average): sum of the data divided by how many there are. It is the "typical value" of a group.
Variation: how far apart the data are from each other or from their mean.
Azar o error experimental ("ruido"): la variación inevitable entre pruebas hechas igual (otro cartón, otra mano, otra medición).Chance or experimental error ("noise"): the unavoidable variation between tests done the same way (another cardboard, another hand, another measurement).
Effect: how much the response changes (on average) when moving from one level of a factor to another.
Null hypothesis (H₀): the claim that the factor does nothing: all means are equal and what we see is pure chance. Alternative hypothesis (H₁): at least one level is truly different.
Significance level (α): the "false alarm" risk we accept, normally 0.05 (5%): declaring an effect when it was only chance.
Si p < α, el resultado es difícil de explicar solo con azar.p-value: the probability of seeing a difference at least as large as the one observed if H₀ were true. If p < α, the result is hard to explain by chance alone.
Los veremos con un ejemplo en el bloque 2 y 4.Degrees of freedom (df): how many data are really "free" when computing something. We will see them with an example in blocks 2 and 4.
Critical value: the table number that serves as a dividing line: if the calculated statistic exceeds it, the effect is declared significant.

🎲1 · Por qué necesitamos estadística: el problema del azar1 · Why we need statistics: the problem of chance5 min

Suppose the ORIGAMI team builds two exactly equal organizers (same thickness, same folding) and loads them until they deform. Result: one holds 2.0 kg and the other 2.2 kg. They are "equal" and yet gave different results. That difference is not the design's fault: it comes from the cardboard, the gluing, the way the weight was placed. It is chance (noise), and it never goes away.

Now they change the thickness and the thick organizer holds 3.6 kg. Is the difference 3.6 kg vs 2.1 kg because thickness does matter (the signal), or is it just another "2.0 vs 2.2" that happened to be bigger by chance (the noise)? Statistics exists to answer this question with numbers instead of intuition.

Makes the signal visible: how much the response changes when each factor changes. It needs no replicates, but it also does not say whether the difference could be chance.

🧮 ANOVAANOVA

Compares the signal against the noise and decides whether the signal is large enough not to be a coincidence. It needs replicates to be able to measure the noise.

Central idea of the whole lesson: signal ÷ noise. If the signal is much larger than the noise, we believe the effect; if they are similar, we cannot tell the effect from chance.
A warning about your digital prototypes: if your response is calculated with a formula (for example, capacity = net area ÷ total area × 100), calculating it again gives exactly the same number. There is no noise to measure, so replicating makes no sense. We will see in block 3 what to do in that case. By contrast, if your response comes from people or real measurements (a 1-to-5 survey, a timed measurement), each repetition does change and replicates do make sense.

🧱2 · Herramientas básicas: media, desviaciones y suma de cuadrados2 · Basic tools: mean, deviations, and sum of squares8 min

Las veremos con cinco prototipos "Delgados" de ORIGAMI que, construidos igual, soportaron:The whole ANOVA is built with three ideas you already know, just with formal names: the average, how far each datum lies from that average, and how to add those distances. We will see them with five "Thin" ORIGAMI prototypes that, built the same way, supported:

Datos (kg)Data (kg)1.9   2.2   2.0   2.3   2.1
1La media: el valor típicoThe mean: the typical value
MediaMeany = Σ yjn = y1 + y2 + … + ynn

Σ (sigma mayúscula) significa "suma de todos". Aplicado a nuestros cinco datos, renglón por renglón:Σ (capital sigma) means "sum of all". Applied to our five data, line by line:

1. Sumar los datos1. Add the data1.9 + 2.2 + 2.0 + 2.3 + 2.1 = 10.5
2. Contar cuántos son2. Count how manyn = 5
3. Dividir la suma entre n3. Divide the sum by ny = 10.5 ÷ 5 = 2.1 kg
2La desviación: qué tan lejos queda cada dato de la mediaThe deviation: how far each datum lies from the mean
DesviaciónDeviationdj = yj − y

A datum above the mean has a positive deviation; below, negative. But if we add the deviations, the total is always zero (positives cancel negatives), so that sum is useless for measuring how spread out the data are.

3La suma de cuadrados (SS): el truco para que no se cancelenThe sum of squares (SS): the trick so they do not cancel

Es la medida básica de "cuánta variación hay".The solution is to square each deviation: that way they all become positive, and data far from the mean weigh more. The sum of those squares is called the sum of squares (SS). It is the basic measure of "how much variation there is".

Suma de cuadradosSum of squaresSS = Σ (yj − y)²
Dato yDatum yDesviación (y − 2.1)Deviation (y − 2.1)Desviación al cuadradoSquared deviation
1.9−0.20.04
2.2+0.10.01
2.0−0.10.01
2.3+0.20.04
2.10.00.00
Σ0.0 (¡siempre cero!)SS = 0.10
4Grados de libertad y varianza: la variación promedioDegrees of freedom and variance: the average variation

A sum of squares grows with the number of data, so to compare it is convenient to average it. But we do not divide by n but by the degrees of freedom. Intuitive idea: if you know the average of 5 data is 2.1 and you know 4 of them, the fifth is no longer free: it is determined. Only 4 of the 5 data are free, so df = n − 1 = 4. A sum of squares divided by its degrees of freedom is called a mean square (in this case, it is the variance).

Varianza y desviación estándarVariance and standard deviations² = SSn − 1 = 0.104 = 0.025   →   s = √0.025 ≈ 0.16 kg
Reading: the five "equal" organizers deviate, on average, about 0.16 kg from their mean. That is the measure of this process's noise. Keep this idea: ANOVA will compare the variation between groups against this variation within a group.
Compruébalo: los datos 4, 6 y 8 → ¿media, SS y varianza?Check yourself: the data 4, 6, and 8 → mean, SS, and variance?
Media = 18 ÷ 3 = 6
Desviaciones: −2, 0, +2 (suman 0)
Cuadrados: 4 + 0 + 4 → SS = 8
gl = 3 − 1 = 2
Varianza = 8 ÷ 2 = 4
Mean = 18 ÷ 3 = 6
Deviations: −2, 0, +2 (they add to 0)
Squares: 4 + 0 + 4 → SS = 8
df = 3 − 1 = 2
Variance = 8 ÷ 2 = 4
Why are the deviations squared instead of being added as they are?
Because the direct sum is always zero (positives cancel negatives). Squaring makes everything positive and gives more weight to data farther from the mean.

Comparación visual, sin réplicas necesariasVisual comparison, no replicates needed

Ideal cuando solo construyeron un prototipo por combinación, o cuando su respuesta se calcula con una fórmulaIdeal when you only built one prototype per combination, or when your response is calculated with a formula

What it is. A plot that shows, for each factor, the average response at each of its levels. What it is for. To see which factor moves the response most (each factor's main effect) and in which direction. Why it works with only one prototype per combination: each level of a factor appears in several combinations, so its average already blends several prototypes.

Media de un nivelMean of a levelynivellevel = suma de las respuestas donde el factor está en ese nivelsum of the responses where the factor is at that levelnúmero de esas respuestasnumber of those responses
What is the "slope" in a means plot? It is how much the line rises or falls when moving from one level to the next, that is, the effect. A line that rises a lot has a large slope (large effect); an almost horizontal one has a slope near zero (the factor hardly matters); one that falls has a negative slope. In the plots below, the vertical arrow to the right of each line marks that rise or fall.

Con 3 o más niveles, el efecto de cada nivel se mide contra la media general: ynivel − y, y el tamaño del efecto del factor se resume con el rango de medias (la media más alta menos la más baja).With 3 or more levels, each level's effect is measured against the grand mean: ylevel − y, and the factor's effect size is summarized by the range of means (the highest mean minus the lowest).

Cómo se construye, paso a pasoHow it is built, step by step

Organize the data in a table: one row per combination, with each factor's levels and the response.
For each factor, calculate the average response at each level (averaging the rows where the factor is at that level).
Plot: one panel per factor, levels on the horizontal axis and average on the vertical, joining the points with a line. Use the same vertical scale in all panels; otherwise they cannot be compared.
Calculate the effect of each factor (difference of means) and rank them from largest to smallest. The steepest line is the dominant factor.
Write the conclusion with units, stating which level is preferable and remembering that the plot shows differences, not proof that they are not chance.

Both lines on the same axes. The slope is the effect: the Thickness line rises 2.20 kg and the Folding line only 0.90 kg, which is why Thickness dominates.

Thickness has an effect (+2.20 kg) more than twice as large as Folding (+0.90 kg): it is the dominant factor, and the best observed combination is Thick + Book (5.1 kg). With one run per combination we cannot claim these differences are not chance; ANOVA would answer that if there were replicates.
To go further (optional): are the lines parallel? If you draw the four runs as two lines (one per folding type) across thickness, you will see that Book rises from 2.2 to 5.1 (+2.9 kg) and Accordion from 2.0 to 3.5 (+1.5 kg). The lines are not parallel: the thickness effect depends on the folding. This is called interaction. Each factor's separate means plot hides it; if your lines cross or fan out, mention that a possible interaction exists.

Same idea with slopes that go down: the Holes line drops more, so it weighs more on capacity.

The Number of holes weighs almost double the Width (−11.25 versus −6.25 points), and both lower capacity because they remove solid area. The decision depends on the challenge's goal: saving material without losing capacity. With the team's criterion of "minimum capacity of 70%", the combination that leaves the most void is 3 holes of 1.6 cm (70.0%), which is variant V2.2 of Activity 5. These are comparative model estimates, not physical tests.
If the team "replicated" run 3, it would calculate 70.0 again and obtain 70.0 once more. All replicates would be identical, the noise would be zero (SSE = 0), and the F statistic would be divided by zero: it does not exist. That is why Activity 7 says "ANOVA only if you replicated". If your response is calculated, submit the means plot and write: "the response is obtained by deterministic calculation, so there is no random variation to measure and ANOVA does not apply".
Si la media de un nivel alto es 4.0 kg y la del nivel bajo es 3.1 kg, ¿cuál es el efecto?If the mean of the high level is 4.0 kg and that of the low level is 3.1 kg, what is the effect?
Efecto = 4.0 − 3.1 = +0.9 kg: al pasar del nivel bajo al alto, la respuesta sube en promedio 0.9 kg.Effect = 4.0 − 3.1 = +0.9 kg: moving from the low to the high level, the response rises 0.9 kg on average.
Two panels of a means plot use different vertical scales. Why is that a mistake?
Because a steep line on a short scale and one on a long scale can look equally steep even if their effects are very different. To compare factors, the scale must be the same.

The idea: comparing variation between groups against variation within groups

Veamos dos escenarios con exactamente las mismas medias (2.1 y 3.6 kg):"Variance" is the key word in the name. ANOVA does not compare means by subtracting them directly: it compares two kinds of variation. The variation between groups is how far apart the level means are (the signal). The variation within groups is how spread out the data of a single level are, which are replicates of the same thing (the noise). Let us look at two scenarios with exactly the same means (2.1 and 3.6 kg):

Escenario A: poco ruidoScenario A: little noiseDelgadoThinȳ = 2.1GruesoThickȳ = 3.612345kgkgEscenario B: mucho ruidoScenario B: a lot of noiseDelgadoThinȳ = 2.1GruesoThickȳ = 3.612345kgkg

Same means, different spread. In A the groups are clearly separated; in B the data of one group and the other overlap.

In A nobody would doubt that thickness matters: the separation between groups (1.5 kg) is huge compared with the spread within each group (0.1 kg). In B the separation is the same, but the data are so spread out that a "Thin" of 3.0 kg beats a "Thick" of 2.7 kg: we cannot tell the effect from chance. ANOVA turns this intuition into a number.

4.2 Las hipótesis4.2 The hypotheses

ANOVA se plantea como un "juicio": se parte de que el factor no hace nada, y se pide que los datos aporten evidencia suficiente para dejar de creerlo.ANOVA is set up like a "trial": it starts by assuming the factor does nothing, and asks the data to provide enough evidence to stop believing it.

H₀ — Hipótesis nulaNull hypothesis

μ1 = μ2 = … = μk. = μk. All true means are equal: the factor has no effect and the observed differences are pure chance.

At least one mean is different: the factor does have an effect.

4.3 Notación: cómo se nombran los datos4.3 Notation: how the data are named

Each group has ni data (replicates). Everyone uses these symbols, so it is worth learning them:

4.4 Las sumas de cuadrados: SSB, SSE y SST4.4 The sums of squares: SSB, SSE, and SST

Usamos la misma idea del bloque 2 (sumar desviaciones al cuadrado) tres veces, según de qué desviación se trate:We use the same idea from block 2 (summing squared deviations) three times, depending on which deviation it is:

Variación ENTRE grupos (la señal)Variation BETWEEN groups (the signal)SSB = Σ ni ( yi − y )²

(SSB, de Sum of Squares Between; Montgomery la llama SS de tratamientos.)It measures how far the group means lie from the grand mean. Each deviation is multiplied by ni because the mean of a group with more data is more reliable. (SSB, Sum of Squares Between; Montgomery calls it SS of treatments.)

Variación DENTRO de los grupos (el ruido o error)Variation WITHIN groups (the noise or error)SSE = Σi Σj ( yij − yi )²

(SSE, de Sum of Squares Error.)It measures how far each datum lies from the mean of its own group. It is the sum of each group's SS, like the SS = 0.10 we calculated in block 2. (SSE, Sum of Squares Error.)

Variación TOTAL y su comprobaciónTOTAL variation and its checkSST = Σ Σ ( yij − y )²   =   SSB + SSE
Si no coincide, hay un error de cálculo (esto también detecta errores de una calculadora o de una herramienta de IA).Trick to check your work: the total variation splits exactly into the "between" part and the "within" part. Calculate SST separately and check that SST = SSB + SSE. If it does not match, there is a calculation error (this also catches errors from a calculator or an AI tool).

4.5 Grados de libertad, cuadrados medios y el estadístico F4.5 Degrees of freedom, mean squares, and the F statistic

Los grados de libertad cuentan cuántos datos son realmente libres:As in block 2, each sum of squares is turned into an average variation by dividing it by its degrees of freedom. Degrees of freedom count how many data are really free:

How to read F: if the factor does nothing, signal and noise are similar and F is close to 1. If the factor matters, the signal exceeds the noise and F is much greater than 1. The question is: how large must F be to believe it? The critical F answers that.

The whole calculation is organized in an ANOVA table, which is the standard format for reporting it:

4.6 La F crítica y la decisión4.6 The critical F and the decision

The critical F is the table value that separates results "believable as chance" from those that are not. It depends on three things: the degrees of freedom between (the table column), the degrees of freedom within (the row), and the significance level α = 0.05. It is looked up in an F-distribution table; this is the part of the table you will need (α = 0.05):

95.124.263.86
104.964.103.71
124.753.893.49

Ejemplo de lectura: con 1 gl entre y 2 gl dentro, F crítica = 18.51; con 2 y 9, F crítica = 4.26. Si necesitan otros valores, en Excel o Hojas de cálculo de Google: =INV.F.CD(0.05; gl_entre; gl_dentro) (en inglés =F.INV.RT(0.05, df1, df2)).Reading example: with 1 df between and 2 df within, critical F = 18.51; with 2 and 9, critical F = 4.26. If you need other values, in Excel or Google Sheets: =F.INV.RT(0.05, df1, df2) (in Spanish-language software =INV.F.CD(0.05; df1; df2)).

Distribución F (ejemplo con 4 y 12 gl). El 5 % de los resultados que ocurrirían solo por azar quedan a la derecha de la F crítica.F distribution (example with 4 and 12 df). The 5% of results that would occur by chance alone lie to the right of the critical F.

The observed difference can be explained by chance (p ≥ 0.05). It is said: "there is not enough evidence of an effect".

The difference is hard to explain by chance alone (p < 0.05). It is said: "the factor has a statistically significant effect".

En Excel: =DISTR.F.CD(F; gl_entre; gl_dentro) (en inglés =F.DIST.RT(F, df1, df2)).The p-value expresses the same thing in another way, as a number. Both rules are equivalent: F > critical F ⇔ p < 0.05. In Excel: =F.DIST.RT(F, df1, df2) (in Spanish-language software =DISTR.F.CD(F; df1; df2)).

What the result does and does not say

Hay que mirar también el tamaño del efecto (gráfica de medias)."Significant" does not mean "large" or "important": a tiny effect can be significant if the noise is small. You must also look at the effect size (means plot).
Not significant" does not prove the factor does nothing: there may be too few replicates to detect it.
With 3 or more levels, a significant F says at least one level differs, not which. To know which, look at the means.

With a 5% false-alarm risk, the difference is not explained by chance alone."
It is combined with the means plot: ANOVA says whether there is an effect and the plot says how much and in which direction.
It is always stated that digital data or data from few tests are estimates.

4.8 Condiciones para que el ANOVA sea válido4.8 Conditions for ANOVA to be valid

Real replicates: each replicate is a new prototype or a new measurement, made under the same conditions. Repeating or copying the same datum is not a replicate and invalidates the analysis.
  2. Independencia: el resultado de una réplica no debe depender del de otra (por ejemplo, no medir a la misma persona dos veces como si fueran dos personas).Independence: the result of one replicate must not depend on another (for example, not measuring the same person twice as if they were two people).
Similar spread across groups: if one group is much more spread out than another, ANOVA loses reliability. With few data, it is enough to check by eye that it is not very different.
Scope in this course: we apply ANOVA one factor at a time, which is the simplest version. The complete analysis of a factorial design (with interaction between factors) is in Montgomery, Design and Analysis of Experiments.

No hay evidencia de efecto; ni siquiera hace falta consultar la tabla.F near or below 1 means the variation between groups (signal) is equal to or smaller than the variation within groups (noise). There is no evidence of an effect; you do not even need to consult the table.
A factor has 3 levels and 4 replicates of each were made. How many degrees of freedom between and within?
k = 3, N = 12
Entre: 3 − 1 = 2
Dentro: 12 − 3 = 9
Total: 12 − 1 = 11 = 2 + 9 ✔
k = 3, N = 12
Between: 3 − 1 = 2
Within: 12 − 3 = 9
Total: 12 − 1 = 11 = 2 + 9 ✔
Con F = 6.2 y F crítica = 7.71, ¿qué concluyes? ¿Y si el equipo quiere "confirmar" el efecto?With F = 6.2 and critical F = 7.71, what do you conclude? And if the team wants to "confirm" the effect?
One should not say "there is no effect". To confirm, more replicates or less noise are needed; it is not acceptable to adjust or pick data until it comes out significant.

Su respuesta se calcula con una fórmula o modelo digital (valores deterministas)Your response is calculated with a formula or digital model (deterministic values)✅ La herramienta correcta✅ The right toolNo aplica: las réplicas serían idénticas (SSE = 0)Does not apply: replicates would be identical (SSE = 0)
Solo tienen 1 dato por combinaciónYou only have 1 datum per combination✅ Única opción posible✅ Only option possibleNo se puede calcularCannot be calculated
Construyeron o midieron 2+ veces cada combinación (respuesta medida o de personas)You built or measured each combination 2+ times (measured or people-based response)Válida, pero menos rigurosaValid, but less rigorous✅ Ideal: conclusión defendible✅ Ideal: defensible conclusion

Recomendación: hagan siempre la gráfica de medias. Si replicaron combinaciones y su respuesta tiene variación real, agreguen el ANOVA para respaldar la conclusión con un valor p.Recommendation: always make the means plot. If you replicated combinations and your response has real variation, add ANOVA to back the conclusion with a p-value.

Cómo escribir la conclusión estadísticaHow to write the statistical conclusion

Plantilla y ejemplo:A good conclusion has five parts: the question, the tool, the numerical result, the decision, and the consequence for the design. Template and example:

PlantillaTemplate
Limitación: [estimación digital / pocas réplicas].""To evaluate whether [factor] affects [response, units], a [means plot / ANOVA] was calculated. The mean went from [x] to [y] ([effect] [units]). [With F = __ and critical F = __ (df = __, __; α = 0.05), the effect is / is not statistically significant.] Therefore, it is advisable to [design decision]. Limitation: [digital estimate / few replicates]."
Ejemplo (ORIGAMI, Ejemplo A)Example (ORIGAMI, Example A)
To evaluate whether cardboard thickness affects the weight supported (kg), the means plot and an ANOVA with 2 replicates per level were calculated. The mean went from 2.1 to 3.6 kg (+1.5 kg). With F = 112.5 and critical F = 18.51 (df = 1, 2; α = 0.05), the effect is statistically significant. Therefore, thick cardboard is advisable. Limitation: only 2 replicates per level, so the noise estimate is imprecise."

Errores comunesCommon mistakes

Copying the same datum twice or recalculating a formula and calling it a "replicate". The noise comes out zero and ANOVA makes no sense.

2 · Escalas distintasDifferent scales

Graficar cada factor con su propia escala vertical y concluir "por la pendiente".Plotting each factor with its own vertical scale and concluding "by the slope".

3 · Decir que "se demostró"Saying it "was proven"

Usen "evidencia" y "estadísticamente significativo".Statistics does not prove: it supports with an error risk. Use "evidence" and "statistically significant".

4 · Confundir F con pConfusing F with p

A large F and a small p go together. Do not compare F with 0.05 or p with the critical F.

5 · Olvidar unidades y contextoForgetting units and context

"El efecto es 2.2" no dice nada; "+2.2 kg al pasar a grueso" sí."The effect is 2.2" says nothing; "+2.2 kg when moving to thick" does.

If the data are not yours, neither is the conclusion.

Lo que deben llevarse de esta lecciónWhat you should take away from this lesson

Every measurement has chance (noise). Statistics compares the signal (the factor's effect) against the noise.
The means plot shows the signal: mean per level, effect = high mean − low mean, same scale in all panels.
Requiere réplicas reales.ANOVA decides whether the signal exceeds the noise: F = MSB ÷ MSE; if F > critical F, the effect is significant. It requires real replicates.
If your response is calculated with a formula, replicates are identical: submit the means plot and explain why ANOVA does not apply.
Always check with SST = SSB + SSE and write a conclusion with units, decision, and limitations.

The means plot of your experiment: mean per level of each factor, effects, and dominant factor.
Deciding whether you replicated: if there are replicates with real variation, the complete ANOVA (SSB, SSE, F vs the critical F); if not, justifying why it does not apply.
The statistical conclusion using this lesson's template, integrated into the Final Report (CHALLENGE-Activity 7).
