Prototipado y Diseño de ExperimentosPrototyping & Design of Experiments

Today we are not assuming you already know how to design experiments: we will learn it from scratch, practice it with a sheet of paper, and then apply it to your own challenge. The first part is theory with short practice; the second is the workshop, where you model digitally, calculate, and compare your design's variants.

In Session 3 you selected a concept. Today the uncomfortable question begins: how do you know it works better than the other options? An experiment is a question asked in such a way that the answer cannot fool you.

🎲 Probar a ciegasTesting blindly

  • Cambias varias cosas a la vez.You change several things at once.
You measure "by eye," differently each time.
You run one test and keep that result.
Result: it got better or worse, but you don't know why.

🔬 Experimentar con métodoExperimenting with method

  • Decides qué cambias y qué mantienes igual. You decide what you change and what you keep the same.
  • Defines cómo vas a medir antes de medir. You define how you will measure before measuring.
  • Repites la medición y comparas. You repeat the measurement and compare.
  • Resultado: sabes qué factor importa y cuánto.Result: you know which factor matters and by how much.
⚓ Proyecto AnclaAnchor Project
The ORIGAMI team, without method: "We made the organizer thicker and it held more." But when rebuilding it they also changed the folding type and used a different cardboard box. Did it hold more because of the thickness, the folding, or the cardboard? They cannot know: three changes got mixed into one. That is called confounding the effects, and it is the most common mistake when testing prototypes.

  • ¿Qué decisión de su proyecto podría salir mal si la toman "a ojo"?Which decision in your project could go wrong if you make it "by eye"?
Have you ever improved something by changing several things at once? Did you know which one worked?

🛠️2 · Prototipado desde cero: construir para pensar2 · Prototyping from scratch: build to think

"Build to think and evaluate to learn." A prototype is not the final product: it is a cheap, fast answer to a question. It can be a sketch, a dimensioned drawing, or a digital mock-up. What matters is that it is quick to make and that it answers one specific question: identify which variable you want to test before building.

🎯Tres propósitos de un prototipo (Stanford d.school)Three purposes of a prototype (Stanford d.school)

❤️ Con empatía (Método 15)With empathy (Method 15)

To learn about the user and their context, even without a solution. It is what you did in interviews when asking "show me" or "draw it."

🧪 Para evaluar (Método 16)To evaluate (Method 16)

Today's purpose. Low-resolution or small-scale prototypes, simple and quick to assemble, that represent different aspects of the solution so you can test them.

⚖️ Para decidir (Método 18)To decide (Method 18)

When the team cannot agree, an evaluated prototype helps decide without risking too much.

✋Reglas de oro para prototipar (Stanford d.school)Golden rules of prototyping (Stanford d.school)

🚀 Empieza a construirStart building

Even if you are not sure what you are doing, the mere act of picking up the material gets you moving.

⏱️ No le dediques demasiado tiempoDon't spend too long on one

Déjalo ir antes de comprometerte emocionalmente con él.Let it go before you get emotionally attached to it.

Each prototype should answer one particular question when evaluated.

🎯 Detalle solo donde importaDetail only where it matters

Focus resolution on what you will evaluate and save effort on everything else.

📏Prototipo digital: lo que sí y lo que no te diceDigital prototype: what it does and does not tell you

✅ Sí te sirve paraIt is useful for

Comparing your designs with each other: which keeps more material in the section, which saves more in construction, which is liked more? If all variants start from the same base model and are calculated the same way, the difference between them is real.

⚠️ No te sirve paraIt is not useful for

Knowing exactly how much the real piece would hold. A digital model does not account for the real material, stress concentration, or how the piece fails. Use it to pick the best design, not to promise a final value.

That is why your values are comparative estimates and are always calculated with the same formula for every variant.

💻Prototipar en digital: del modelo base a las variantesPrototyping digitally: from the base model to the variants

A 2D drawing with measurements or a simple 3D model is enough; what is evaluated is that every variant is properly measured and documented. This is the procedure you will follow in the workshop:

Choose the tool. Any tool that lets you set exact measurements and display them: a 3D modeling program, a technical drawing program, or even shapes with dimensions in a presentation. For Option A, drawing the brick's cross-section is enough.
Guarden este archivo como "base".Draw the base model with measurements. Define the outer outline (length × width) and the unit. Everything that is constant stays the same in all variants. Save this file as "base".
Duplicate the base, one copy per variant. Each copy starts from the base model, not from another variant; that way the only change is the one you decide.
  4. Cambien solo los niveles de esa combinación. Por ejemplo, V1 lleva 2 cavidades y V2 lleva 4. Si una variante cambia algo más, los efectos se confunden, igual que en el caso de ORIGAMI.Change only the levels of that combination. For example, V1 has 2 cavities and V2 has 4. If a variant changes anything else, the effects get confounded, just as in the ORIGAMI case.
  5. Acoten y capturen. Dimension and capture. Leave the measurements visible and take at least 2 different views of each variant, with the code in the file name.
Calculate the values by hand. Areas, percentages, and savings, writing each operation next to that variant's screenshot.
🧪 Ejemplo ficticio: "Tabique Z"Fictional example: "Brick Z"

V1 · 2 cavidades2 cavities

4×6 24 12 288 − 2×24 = 240

Capacidad relativa = 240 ÷ 288 = 83.3 %Relative capacity = 240 ÷ 288 = 83.3%

V2 · 4 cavidades4 cavities

4×6 24 12 288 − 4×24 = 192

Capacidad relativa = 192 ÷ 288 = 66.7 %Relative capacity = 192 ÷ 288 = 66.7%

Made-up case to see the method; it is not EcoBricks. Note that both variants start from the same 24 × 12 outline and only the number of cavities changes.

📖3 · El vocabulario del experimento3 · The vocabulary of an experiment

An experiment is defined by three elements: factors (the variables the team controls, e.g. material thickness), levels (the specific values each factor is tested at, e.g. thin/thick), and the response variable (what gets measured as the result, e.g. maximum weight supported). Design of Experiments is the discipline that decides how to combine factors and levels to get the most information from the fewest tests.

🎛️ FactorFactor

Lo que tú decides cambiar a propósito. What you deliberately decide to change.

🔀 NivelLevel

Cada valor que toma un factor. Con 2 niveles pruebas "bajo" y "alto".Each value a factor takes. With 2 levels you test "low" and "high."

📏 RespuestaResponse

Lo que mides para saber qué pasó.What you measure to know what happened.

🔒 ConstantesConstants

Everything else, which you must keep the same in every test.

🔗De su Matriz Morfológica a sus factoresFrom your Morphological Matrix to your factors

You already have a source of factors: the parameters of the Morphological Matrix from Session 3, and the options in each row are your candidate levels. To choose the experiment's 2 factors, apply three criteria:

1 · Lo controlas1 · You control it

You can model both levels on purpose and repeatably.

2 · Sospechas que importa2 · You suspect it matters

Your research or Empathy Map suggests it affects what you care about.

3 · Los niveles son distintos3 · The levels are clearly different

Si "delgado" y "grueso" casi no se distinguen, no verás ningún efecto. Separa bien los niveles. If "thin" and "thick" are barely distinguishable, you will see no effect. Separate the levels well.

🧠Compruébalo: ¿qué es cada cosa?Check yourself: what is each thing?

1. "Cuántas cavidades lleva el modelo: 2 o 4."1. "How many cavities the model has: 2 or 4."
Factor, con 2 niveles (2 y 4 cavidades). Tú decides cambiarlo.Factor, with 2 levels (2 and 4 cavities). You decide to change it.
"The net area of the section as a percentage of the total area."
Response variable: it is what you measure to know what happened.
"That all variants use the same outer dimensions and the same unit."
Constant (controlled) variable: it is kept the same so it does not confuse the result.
"Accordion" and "book" as two folding types.
Niveles del factor "tipo de plegado". Son niveles cualitativos (categorías), no números.Levels of the factor "folding type." They are qualitative levels (categories), not numbers.

📐4 · Medir bien4 · Measuring well

An experiment is worth only as much as its measurement. If you calculate each variant in a different way, the difference you see may come from how you calculated and not from the design. In a digital model, measuring well means defining how each value is calculated before calculating it, always using the same formula, and keeping everything else the same.

1️⃣Escribe la definición operativa de tu variable de respuestaWrite the operational definition of your response variable

An operational definition states exactly what is calculated or measured, with which formula or instrument, and in which unit. Any teammate should be able to repeat it and get the same thing.

Draw the cross-section with measurements. Total area: the outer outline, as if it had no voids. Net area: the total area minus the areas of the voids. Response: relative capacity (%) = net area ÷ total area × 100.

It is a comparative indicator: more material in the section usually means more load capacity, but it does not account for stress concentration, buckling, or the real material. It is for ranking your variants, not for promising a value. And more material also weighs and costs more, which is why there is a second response.

This value is calculated from the geometry of your model. Choose a construction cost your shape affects (cement or mortar to join, rebar, paint or finishing) and compare how much is needed with the current shape and with the new one.

Fictional example (made-up numbers, only to see the method). An imaginary brick needs mortar to join its faces. In the model, the joint line measures 4 units per piece with the current shape and 3 units with a shape that interlocks along its edges. The reduction is (4 − 3) ÷ 4 = 25% less joint length per piece, which is an initial estimate of mortar savings. To turn it into money you must multiply by a real price, which you must get from your guests or your research; do not make it up.
Relative capacity (%) = net area ÷ total area × 100
Relative savings (%) = (amount with the current shape − amount with the new shape) ÷ amount with the current shape × 100
Savings in money = savings in amount × real unit price

Ask at least 5 people who did not take part in the design to view or play each version on screen and rate it from 1 (would not play) to 5 (would play again). Always use the same question and do not explain your intentions. Response: the average of the ratings.

⏱️ Opción B · Tiempo por rondaOption B · Time per round

Define when the round starts (for example, "when the player chooses their first option") and when it ends (for example, "when the result is announced"). Simulate 3 rounds per version and time them with a phone, always the same person. Response: the average of the seconds.

2️⃣Cuatro reglas para calcular con confianzaFour rules for calculating with confidence

🔁 VerificaVerify

Option A: have another teammate recalculate each variant and compare. One arithmetic slip changes the ranking. Option B: repeat the measurement (3 rounds, 5 people) and use the average.

🎟️ Sortea el ordenRandomize the order

Especially in Option B: do not always show the versions in the same order, because the first or last one gets rated differently. Draw the order with slips of paper.

🔒 Mantén lo demás igualKeep everything else the same

Same outer dimensions, same units, same tool, and the same formula in every variant. Only the factor levels change.

📝 Anota todoWrite everything down

Dimensions, operations, assumptions, and screenshots with the variant's code. A strange result is information, not an error to erase.

Frequent mistakes: changing two things at once in a variant, calculating with different formulas, mixing units, and not writing down the operations.

1️⃣

Prueba secuencial, un factor por vezSequential testing, one factor at a time

Menos pruebas, pero puede pasar por alto interaccionesFewer tests, but can miss interactions

Set a baseline variant (all factors at their starting level) and calculate or measure the response variable.
Change only one factor to its other level, keeping everything else the same, and measure again.
Repeat step 2 for each factor, one at a time, always starting from the baseline.
Conclude which factor had the most effect — but you never test the combinations between factors.

🔢Herramienta 2 — Diseño Factorial CompletoTool 2 — Full Factorial Design

🔢

Prueba todas las combinaciones posiblesTests every possible combination

Más pruebas, pero detecta interacciones entre factoresMore tests, but detects interactions between factors

  1. Listen todos los factores y niveles (ej. 2 factores × 2 niveles = 4 combinaciones; 2 factores, uno con 2 niveles y otro con 3 = 6 combinaciones).List all factors and levels (e.g. 2 factors × 2 levels = 4 combinations; 2 factors, one with 2 levels and one with 3 = 6 combinations).
Create one digital variant for every possible combination.
Calculate or measure the response variable on each one.
Compare: if the combined effect differs from the sum of individual effects, there's an interaction between factors — something OFAT could never detect.

See it in a square: which combinations get tested?

Each corner is a variant. OFAT conclusion: thick walls add +1.5 kg and book folding adds +0.2 kg → the team predicts combining both would give ~3.7 kg. But they never built that prototype to check it.

3Delgado / ThinLibro / Book2.2 kg
4Grueso / ThickLibro / Book5.1 kg

⚠️ La interacción que OFAT se hubiera perdido⚠️ The interaction OFAT would have missed

The real combination (Thick + Book) gives 5.1 kg, not the 3.7 kg predicted by adding the effects separately. Thickness and folding interact: together they generate more strength than expected. Only by testing every combination could the team discover this.

How to read the results by hand (with ORIGAMI's data)

No necesitan software. Datos: P1 = 2.0, P2 = 3.5, P3 = 2.2, P4 = 5.1 kg. You do not need software. With the 4 values of the factorial you answer in 3 steps which factor matters, how much, and whether they interact. Data: P1 = 2.0, P2 = 3.5, P3 = 2.2, P4 = 5.1 kg.

In your challenge you will calculate the value from the digital model, but reading the effects works exactly the same way.

Step 3 · Do they interact? Compare the folding effect at each thickness level. With thick walls, going from accordion to book adds 5.1 − 3.5 = +1.6 kg; with thin walls it adds only 2.2 − 2.0 = +0.2 kg. The difference, 1.6 − 0.2 = 1.4 kg, is the interaction: folding "pays off" much more when the wall is thick.

Note: in the formal analysis, which you will see in Session 6, the interaction effect is usually reported as half of that difference (0.7 kg). The idea is the same.

Each line shows one thickness level. If there were no interaction, the lines would be parallel: folding would contribute the same with thick and thin walls. Here the thick line climbs a lot and the thin one barely moves: the lines fan out, and that opening is the interaction.

With 2 factors, the full factorial only costs 1-2 more variants than OFAT — it's almost always worth it. Use it yourselves in this session's workshop with your own challenge.

🧭Cómo decidir su diseño en tres preguntasHow to decide your design in three questions

1 · ¿Cuántas variantes puedo modelar y calcular?1 · How many variants can I model and calculate?

With a digital model and about 70 minutes (modeling, calculation, screenshots, and research): 3 to 6. More than that cannot be documented well.

2 · ¿Sospecho que mis factores interactúan?2 · Do I suspect my factors interact?

If shape and thickness, or two parameters of your matrix, might reinforce each other, the factorial is the only way to see it.

3 · ¿Puedo justificar mi elección?3 · Can I justify my choice?

The activity asks for justification. "It is easier" is not enough: explain what you gain and what you lose with your choice.

Guarden los demás para iterar en la Sesión 5.Choosing too many factors: with 3 factors of 2 levels it is already 8 variants. Save the others to iterate in Session 5.
  • Niveles demasiado parecidos: no se verá ningún efecto.Levels that are too similar: no effect will show.
Accidentally changing two things in one variant: each variant should only differ from another in the level of the chosen factors.
  • Calcular cada variante de manera distinta.Calculating each variant differently.

🧪 Práctica, no se entregaPractice, not submitted

The paper helicopter is a classic exercise, popularized by statistician George Box, for learning design of experiments with a single sheet. Its response is the fall time. Today we use it to practice, in 20 minutes, everything we just saw: factors, levels, measuring well, repeating, randomizing the order, and calculating effects. None of this is submitted.

How to build them (one sheet per team, no scissors)

  1. Cuatro tiras. Four strips. Fold the sheet in half lengthwise (long edges together), and in half again. Unfold, crease the folds well, and tear along all three. You get 4 equal strips, one per helicopter.
Mark the center and the segments. On each strip, fold it in half lengthwise to mark the center line. Then fold it in half twice across to mark 4 equal segments, and unfold.
Adjust the length. The body is always 1 segment. Short wings: 1 segment, so the strip ends up 2 segments long. Long wings: 2 segments, so it ends up 3 long. Tear off and discard the rest.
Make the wings. Tear from the top along the center line to where the wings end. Fold one half forward and the other backward, so they look like helicopter rotor blades.
The body. Narrow: fold the body in half along the center line. Wide: leave it flat. Write H1, H2, H3, or H4 on each one.

Crease the wing folds harder, so one is clearly forward and the other backward.
No debe tener impulso.Release it with the wings up and horizontal, without throwing it. It should have no push.
If one drop is very different from the others, repeat it: it may have been the release, not the design.

🎟️Sorteo del orden de las 12 caídasDrawing the order of the 12 drops

Each helicopter is dropped 3 times. Instead of slips of paper, you can draw with this button; the order is random.

Release from a fully stretched arm overhead, standing and without chairs. Start at release and stop when it touches the floor. Each time is saved below so you can copy it into the table.
