Seis fases para pasar de un problema real a una solución validada Six phases to go from a real problem to a validated solution
Design Thinking is a human-centered methodology for solving problems creatively: instead of jumping straight to a solution, time is first invested in deeply understanding the user and the real problem. Throughout this block (Modules 1 and 3) you'll work through the process's six phases, applying them to the challenge your group decides to solve.
To begin the process, we must first establish the basis of the problem: put ourselves in the place of those who live its consequences and analyze how their environment influences the design of the solution.
The knowledge gained in the empathy stage is used, filtering the information to find the truly essential elements that lead to genuinely innovative solutions.
It's essential to ideate freely: brainstorming can lead to all kinds of proposals — even ones that seem absurd at first can lead to an effective solution.
This is the stage where solutions become reality and where we realize how effective an idea really is; possible improvements are tested and evaluated here.
The project is taken to its final stage: the user identified in the empathy phase is used to put the winning solution to the test and find out whether it really works.
With the information collected in testing, the necessary changes are made to have the product ready, with which you take part in the final presentation to the group.
Each phase alternates between diverging (generating many possibilities without judging — as in Empathize and Ideate) and converging (selecting and deciding, using criteria and selection tools — as when defining the problem or choosing a concept). The process also rarely moves in a straight line: a finding during Testing can send you back to Ideate, or even to Empathize, to adjust the solution. This isn't a flaw in the process — it's exactly how it's designed to work.
Here's what the full process looks like applied to the modular tool organizer. Each of these stages will be explained in depth, with its own lesson and workshop, in upcoming sessions.
The team interviewed Carlos (a student) and Diana (a lab technician) and built a Total Empathy Map with their findings.
They defined the problem: "Workshop users need a fixed, inexpensive spot for their small tools, transportable between buildings."
They applied brainstorming and a morphological matrix, generating 12 possible combinations of compartments and folding mechanisms.
They built a full-scale cardboard mockup using the plane-transformation technique.
They handed Carlos the prototype without explaining anything and watched how he opened it and filled it with his tools.
With feedback from testing, they adjusted the cardboard thickness and delivered the final design ready for production.
