Toma de Decisiones en EquipoTeam Decision-Making

Dos herramientas formales para decidir con datos, no con quien habla más fuerteTwo formal tools for deciding with data, not with whoever talks loudest

🗳️¿Por qué no basta con "votar a mano alzada"?Why isn't a show of hands enough?

Formal decision tools let the decision be heard and made based on reflection, the difficulty of the design challenge, and how well it meets objectives — not on power, position, or how outgoing a person is. Raising hands creates a "bandwagon" effect: people vote for whatever the visible majority already voted for, or whatever the most influential person voted for first.

Design Thinking has several formal tools for this "converging" moment — choosing between alternatives. Here you'll see two, applied to the same dilemma, so you have options when your team needs to decide something later in the project (for example, which design concept to develop in Module 1).

🔵Herramienta 1 — Dot VotingTool 1 — Dot Voting

🔵

Votación con puntosVoting with dots

Ideal para decidir rápido entre muchas opciones, de forma visual y democráticaIdeal for deciding quickly among many options, visually and democratically

Each participant receives a fixed number of votes (e.g. 3 dots).
Everyone votes privately and simultaneously — no one sees another's vote before casting their own.
If there's a risk someone might influence too much (e.g. the team lead), that person votes last.
Points per option are counted; the one with the most points advances. In case of a tie, a second round is held only among the tied options.

◻️Herramienta 2 — Matriz 2x2Tool 2 — 2x2 Matrix

◻️

Categorización visual en dos ejesVisual categorization on two axes

Ideal cuando importa más de un criterio a la vez (no solo "me gusta más")Ideal when more than one criterion matters at once (not just "I like it more")

"Viabilidad" vs. "Interés del equipo").A grid is drawn and the two axes are named based on what matters for the decision (e.g. "Feasibility" vs. "Team interest").
The team discusses and positions each option on the grid, seeking consensus on where it falls on each axis.
  3. Se prioriza lo que cae en el cuadrante superior derecho (alto en ambos criterios).Priority goes to what falls in the top-right quadrant (high on both criteria).
Unlike Dot Voting, this tool forces you to discuss why — not just to prefer.

⚖️El mismo dilema, resuelto con ambas herramientasThe same dilemma, solved with both tools

Here's what it would look like, with example data, for a group of 20 students deciding between the two challenge options:

🔵 Con Dot Voting (3 votos por persona, 60 votos totales)With Dot Voting (3 votes per person, 60 total votes)

Opción A · LadrilloOption A · Brick
36
Opción B · JuegoOption B · Game
24

Result: Option A wins with 36 of 60 votes (60%). Fast and clear — but it doesn't explain why.

With 2x2 Matrix (Feasibility with available resources × Team interest)

Alto interésHigh interest Bajo interésLow interest Alta viabilidadHigh feasibility Baja viabilidadLow feasibility
A
B

Result: A falls in the top-right quadrant (high technical feasibility with cardboard and recycled tires available in the workshop, high declared interest). B falls more toward the center-low, since it requires components the group isn't sure how to source. The matrix confirms the vote, but also explains the technical reason.

In the Session 1 Workshop you'll practice both tools with your group's real decision. Keep this lesson handy: you'll use it again when your team has to choose a design concept in Module 1.
